Notes In human, S100A9 is usually co-expressed with S100A8, and they form heterodimeric complexes, which was named as calprotectin. Fecal calprotectin is a marker for inflammatory gastrointestinal as well as neoplastic diseases. It is often difficult to distinguish between IBD and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This leads in many cases to extensive and unnecessary colonoscopic examinations. Fecal calprotectin may be a useful marker for discriminating between patients with IBD and IBS. In addition, fecal calprotectin levels correlate significantly with histologic and endoscopic assessment of disease activity in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
